One of the biggest perks of planning a wedding in San Diego is the weather. With mild temperatures, beautiful coastlines, and venues ranging from oceanfront estates to vineyards and historic properties, there really isn’t a bad time to get married here.
But if you’re trying to choose a wedding date, you may still be wondering: What is the best month to get married in San Diego?
For many couples, September and October are two of the best months for a San Diego wedding, especially if beautiful weather, outdoor portraits, and an indoor-outdoor celebration are high on your priority list. That said, every season has something a little different to offer.
As a San Diego wedding photographer, here’s what I would consider when choosing the perfect month for your wedding.
September Weddings in San Diego
If you picture your wedding day with warm weather, golden light, outdoor cocktails, and an evening spent under the stars, September is hard to beat.
September is historically one of San Diego’s warmer and drier months. Coastal climate data shows average highs around the upper 70s, while rainfall is typically minimal.
The biggest thing to keep in mind is that San Diego County has several different microclimates. A coastal wedding in La Jolla or Coronado can feel very different from a wedding farther inland, where temperatures may be noticeably warmer.
September is especially beautiful for:
- Coastal and oceanfront weddings
- Outdoor ceremonies
- Sunset portraits
- Cocktail hours outside
- Couples who want a true Southern California feel
From a photography perspective, September also gives us plenty of opportunity to take advantage of that warm, golden Southern California light.
October Weddings in San Diego
If I had to choose one month that offers an especially beautiful balance for a San Diego wedding, October would be at the top of the list.
October is still generally warm and relatively dry, but temperatures begin to become a little more comfortable than the peak of summer. Historical San Diego climate data puts average coastal highs around the mid-70s.
This makes October particularly appealing if you want an outdoor ceremony without worrying quite as much about summer heat.
It also works beautifully with so many different wedding aesthetics. You can lean into classic black and white, romantic neutrals, warm autumn tones, or something completely colorful without your wedding necessarily feeling like a traditional “fall wedding.”
For couples dreaming of a timeless, romantic San Diego wedding, October may be my favorite overall choice.
May Weddings in San Diego
May can be another gorgeous option, especially if you prefer slightly cooler temperatures.
Average coastal highs are around the upper 60s, and historically, rainfall has already dropped significantly compared with the winter months.
There is one San Diego weather pattern worth noting. Late spring can bring a marine layer and overcast mornings along the coast. That doesn’t mean your wedding will be cloudy or that cloudy weather is a bad thing for photographs! Soft cloud cover can actually create beautiful, even light for portraits.
But if your heart is set on bright blue skies and sunshine throughout your entire wedding day, it’s something to consider when choosing a spring date.
June Weddings in San Diego
June brings warmer temperatures and very little rainfall, making it easy to understand why couples consider it for their San Diego wedding.
However, you’ve probably heard the phrase June Gloom.
Coastal areas can experience low clouds and marine-layer conditions, particularly during the morning hours. San Diego still has wonderfully mild temperatures during this time. Average coastal highs are in the low 70s but a June wedding doesn’t automatically mean clear blue skies all day.
If you’re getting married closer to the coast, I wouldn’t necessarily rule June out because of this. Instead, embrace the possibility of softer weather and make sure you love your venue in both sunny and overcast conditions.
July and August Weddings in San Diego
If warm weather is exactly what you’re looking for, July and August may be perfect.
Rain is historically extremely uncommon during these months, and average coastal highs reach the mid-to-upper 70s.
Just remember that “San Diego weather” varies considerably depending on where you’re getting married. Temperatures near the coast can be comfortable while inland venues may be significantly hotter.
If you’re planning an inland summer wedding, I’d consider scheduling portraits around the strongest afternoon heat whenever your timeline allows. A later ceremony can also give you the opportunity to take advantage of softer evening light.
For coastal weddings, summer can be absolutely beautiful especially if you’re dreaming about that quintessential Southern California wedding experience.
November Weddings in San Diego
Don’t overlook November!
Temperatures begin cooling down, but compared with many parts of the country, San Diego can still offer incredibly comfortable wedding weather. Average coastal highs are around 70 degrees.
November can be especially lovely for couples who don’t want a hot wedding day. Earlier sunsets will affect your photography timeline, though, so this is where planning your ceremony and portrait times around the available daylight becomes particularly important.
If you want outdoor portraits, I always recommend building the photography timeline around sunset rather than simply choosing portrait times based on when cocktail hour begins.
December Through March Weddings in San Diego
A winter wedding in San Diego looks a little different from a winter wedding in most of the country.
Temperatures remain relatively mild, which means outdoor portraits can still be completely realistic. However, winter is when rain becomes a bigger consideration.
According to the National Weather Service, approximately 85% of San Diego’s rainfall historically occurs between November and March.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t plan a winter wedding. It simply makes having a rain plan more important, particularly if you’re choosing a venue with an outdoor ceremony or reception space.
Winter also brings earlier sunsets, which can be beautiful for couples who want romantic evening photographs but your wedding timeline needs to account for the available daylight.
April Weddings in San Diego
April is a beautiful transition month.
Temperatures are mild, rainfall historically drops considerably compared with the winter months, and the heavier coastal marine layer associated with May and June hasn’t necessarily arrived yet. Average coastal highs sit around the upper 60s.
If you love spring weddings and comfortable temperatures, April is definitely worth considering.
So, What Is the Best Month to Get Married?
If weather and photography were my biggest considerations, I would look closely at September and October, with October being an especially beautiful all-around option.
You’ll generally have warm weather, relatively little rain, and plenty of opportunities to take advantage of San Diego’s outdoor spaces.
But the best month ultimately depends on the wedding you’re envisioning.
Want warm, sunny Southern California energy? Consider July through September.
Want comfortable temperatures with a lower historical chance of rain? September or October are worth considering.
Prefer cooler weather? Look at April, May, October, or November.
Love the idea of a winter celebration? December through March can absolutely work — just prioritize a venue with a beautiful indoor backup plan.
And remember: averages are just that — averages. No month can guarantee perfect weather.
Choosing Your San Diego Wedding Date With Photography in Mind
The month you choose doesn’t just affect the weather. It also changes your wedding-day light.
Sunset time can make a major difference in when you schedule your ceremony, family photographs, wedding party portraits, and couple’s portraits. If beautiful outdoor photography is important to you, I recommend considering the light before your timeline is finalized.
This is especially important for late fall and winter weddings when the sun sets earlier.
