Your wedding isn’t the only chapter of your relationship worth documenting.
For their first anniversary, these two wanted to celebrate one year of marriage with photos in Joshua Tree. I can’t think of a more perfect location. With its desert landscape, iconic Joshua trees, rugged rock formations, and the prettiest light, Joshua Tree has a way of making everything feel a little more special.
Their session was relaxed and romantic, with plenty of time to explore the desert, take in the scenery, and create photographs that celebrated where they are one year into marriage.
And honestly? Anniversary sessions deserve to be more of a thing.
Celebrating One Year of Marriage in Joshua Tree
There is so much excitement surrounding the wedding itself, but I love the idea of continuing to document your relationship after the wedding day is over.
Your first anniversary is especially meaningful. You’ve officially made it through your first year as a married couple, settled into life together, and probably experienced quite a bit since saying “I do.”
Golden Hour in Joshua Tree
If you’re considering Joshua Tree anniversary photos, sunset is hard to beat. Joshua Tree also gives us plenty of variety without needing to travel to completely different locations. Open desert, Joshua trees, mountains, and rocky landscapes can all create a different feel within the same gallery.
Why Take Anniversary Photos?
You don’t need a wedding or an engagement to have a reason to take professional photographs together.
So much changes after your wedding day. Maybe you’ve moved across the country, bought your first home, traveled somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit, added a dog to the family, or simply settled into the everyday routines of being married.
Those seasons are worth remembering, too.
An anniversary session can be as elaborate or as simple as you want it to be. You can put your wedding attire back on, plan a destination session somewhere you’ve always wanted to visit, or simply choose a location you love and spend an evening together.
There’s no wedding day schedule to follow and no pressure to create anything other than photographs that feel like the two of you right now.
What to Wear for Joshua Tree Anniversary Photos
Joshua Tree is one of those locations where your wardrobe can completely change the feeling of your photographs.
The desert itself is filled with neutral colors, warm browns, sandy tones, muted greens, and soft blues, so you have a lot of flexibility when choosing what to wear.
Cream, white, black, brown, olive, rust, denim, and other earthy tones all look beautiful against the landscape. You can also use the neutral scenery as an opportunity to introduce a richer color if that’s more your style.
I typically love having two outfits for a couples session: one that feels a little more elevated and another that’s more relaxed.
A long dress or fabric with movement can look incredible in the desert, particularly when there’s a little wind. For a more casual look, denim, boots, sweaters, linen, and other simple pieces fit naturally into the Joshua Tree landscape.
Most importantly, though, your outfits should still feel like you.
When to Plan a Joshua Tree Couples Session
If you’re planning photos in Joshua Tree, I recommend scheduling your session around sunrise or sunset.
Not only is the light softer and more flattering, but desert temperatures can become intense during the middle of the day, particularly during warmer months.
Spring and fall can offer more comfortable temperatures, while winter can be beautiful but surprisingly chilly once the sun disappears. Summer sessions require a little more planning because of the heat, making an early sunrise or later evening session especially important.
We’ll always plan your exact session time around the season, weather, and available light rather than choosing an arbitrary time on the calendar.
Planning Photos in Joshua Tree National Park
If you’re hoping to photograph inside Joshua Tree National Park, there are a few logistical things to consider in addition to the pretty scenery.
We’ll want to check the park’s current photography guidelines and any applicable permit requirements before your session. Rules can change, so I always prefer to confirm the latest information while we’re planning rather than assume. Check here for latest information.
It’s also important to remember that this is a protected desert environment. We’ll respect closures, plants, wildlife, and sensitive areas while choosing locations.
I also recommend bringing water and comfortable shoes for walking between spots. You can always change into your nicer shoes once we’re ready to photograph.
And because cell service can be unreliable in parts of the area, we’ll make sure we have our meeting location and directions figured out beforehand.
Turn Your Anniversary Session Into a Getaway
If you’re traveling to Joshua Tree for photos, make a weekend out of it.
Book the Airbnb you’ve been saving, spend the afternoon exploring, have your anniversary photos taken around sunset, and make dinner reservations afterward.
That’s one of the reasons I love destination anniversary sessions so much. The photographs become part of an experience rather than the entire experience.
And when you look back at your gallery years from now, you’re not only remembering what the two of you looked like at your first anniversary. You’re remembering the trip, the desert, where you stayed, what you did afterward, and what life felt like during your first year of marriage.
Joshua Tree Anniversary Photographer
You don’t need to wait for another huge milestone.
Whether you’re celebrating your first anniversary, your tenth, an engagement, or simply a season of life you don’t want to forget, Joshua Tree makes an incredible setting for photographs that feel romantic, relaxed, and a little adventurous.
I’m a Southern California wedding and couples photographer with an approach that blends timeless portraits with the candid moments happening in between. I’ll give you direction when you need it, but we’ll also leave plenty of room to move around, explore, laugh, and actually enjoy the experience together.
If you’re dreaming about your own Joshua Tree anniversary photos, I’d love to hear what you’re planning.
