Being a Detroit wedding photographer lets me experience so many incredible weddings, but Ryley and Jack’s day at The Riverside was truly unforgettable. From the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) to the historic train station, and finally to sunset photos on the rooftop, their day was one to remember.
I first got to know Ryley and Jack during their engagement session in St. Louis – a city that holds a big piece of their story. Ryley was in school there while Jack was working in Detroit, and they navigated long-distance for a while. When it came time for their engagement photos, they chose their favorite bar in St. Louis – the spot where they had spent so many weekends together. Photographing them in that cozy, familiar space was such a fun glimpse into their relationship. You could tell how much they both mean to each other.
By the time their wedding day rolled around, I felt like I was capturing two old friends. I have absolutely adored getting to know Ryley and Jack. Watching them celebrate their love in Detroit, the city where they hold so many memories, was nothing short of perfection.
The Riverside – A Venue with History and Charm
For couples looking for an industrial chic wedding venue with deep roots in Detroit, The Riverside is a hidden gem. Originally built in 1920 as The Riverside Cartage and Storage Co., this space started as a cold storage warehouse and has since been transformed into a stunning event venue. You can still find incredible historic details preserved throughout – from Albert Kahn-style martini columns to original fire doors and even a walk-in safe.
The charm of The Riverside lies in how seamlessly the modern updates blend with the venue’s historic and industrial features. Its the perfect space for couples who love a mix of old and new. As a wedding photographer, venues like this offer endless creative possibilities. The exposed brick, soft industrial lighting, and large windows that flood the space with natural light make for incredible photo opportunities at every turn.
A Perfect Start at the Westin Book Cadillac
The day began at the Westin Book Cadillac Hotel, a historic gem in downtown Detroit. There’s just something about the place—it has this timeless elegance but with all the modern touches. Ryley spent the morning getting ready in one of the suites with her bridal party, and there was so much excitement She looked absolutely radiant in her gown—a stunning mix of classic and modern design.
One of the most touching moments of the morning was Ryley and Jack’s first look. Jack chose the grand staircase in the hotel’s grand lobby, a setting as stunning as the moment itself. As Jack turned to see Ryley for the first time, his eyes lit up with love and awe. The emotion in the room set the tone for the rest of the day—intimate, joyful, and filled with genuine connection.
Photos Around Detroit’s Best Landmarks
After the first look, Ryley and Jack made their way to some of Detroit’s most iconic spots, setting the stage for some unforgettable portraits. Their first stop was Michigan Central Station, a landmark that’s as rich in history as it is in character. While the station sat vacant for years, recent restoration efforts have transformed it into a stunning venue. Theintricate details created the perfect backdrop, adding a layer of romance to their photos. From there, they headed to the Detroit Institute of Arts, where the museum’s classic marble staircase and elegant design brought a timeless feel to their portraits.
Ryley’s dress was stunning – the kind of gown that turns heads and photographs like a dream. Every shot felt like it belonged in a magazine, whether she was standing under the arches of Michigan Central Station or walking along the steps of the DIA. There was something about each location that made the whole day feel magical.
Cocktail Hour
One of my favorite things couples are doing is joining cocktail hour with their guests. Its truly the best way to enjoy your wedding day and unwind from the ceremony and portrait time. Ryley and Jack decided to jump right into the celebration, and it was such a perfect move. It gave them the chance to connect with everyone who came to celebrate with them, sharing laughs, toasts, and memories as the sun started to set. You could tell how much their friends and family adore them and how happy everyone was to be there. It was an evening that felt less like a formal event and more like an intimate celebration of love and togetherness.
Rooftop Sunset Portraits
When the sun started dipping, we snuck up to the rooftop for some golden hour photos. Detroit’s skyline paired with beautiful soft light – it doesn’t get better than that. These were some of my favorite shots from the day. There’s something magical about sunsets on rooftops, and The Riverside’s view is unbeatable.
The Reception
The transformation of The Riverside for the reception was nothing short of spectacular. The industrial space was softened by candlelight and elegant centerpieces, creating a romantic, atmosphere. The speeches had everyone laughing (and maybe crying a little more).
Detroit Never Disappoints
It’s impossible to talk about this wedding without mentioning how incredible Detroit is as a wedding backdrop. Between the timeless beauty of the Westin, the elegant feel of the DIA, and the train station, the city brings so much character to a celebration.
But beyond the locations, it was Ryley and Jack’s connection that made this day so special. They embraced every moment, from the tears during their vows to the laughter at the cocktail hour, making the day feel genuine and unforgettable.
If you’re thinking about getting married at The Riverside, I can’t recommend it enough. And if you need someone to capture it all, I’d love to be there for you! Let’s connect about your wedding day!
