Cheers to five years! Today we celebrate five freaking years of being in love so why not blog about our love story for a change.
I met John through a mutual friend on New Years 2014 (wow that feels like forever ago!)
When John and I met, I was a freshly 21 year old who was still in college and he was a 21 year old Marine who was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. John had just gotten back from a deployment in Australia and was able to come back and visit his family. As John was getting off the plane at DTW, I was getting my hair done by my hairdresser. My hairdresser casually mentioned that John and I would be perfect for each other and we should meet up. We texted for a few days before John invited me to a New Years party. I needed to make sure he wasn’t a killer so I suggested we meet up at a bar the day before (you know, because it’s a public place haha) The moment we started talking, it felt like I had known him my whole life. My favorite part about that night was not getting ID’ed for alcohol when I clearly looked 12 years old and him getting ID’ed.
Not long after, John asked me to be his girlfriend and we tackled long distance together. John still had two years left of the Marines until he was home for good. We experienced so many up and downs during his time in the Marines but I wouldn’t trade it for anything. We experienced two Marine Corps Birthday Balls, many trips to California, one difficult 6 month deployment, a million care packages, my kidney transplant, birthdays, holidays, and so many more new experiences together.
Fast forward to when John got out of the Marines. We adjusted to real life. It was so great being able to hangout like normal couples but it was definitely an adjustment going from seeing each other every few months to seeing each other every single day. Being able to drive 20 minutes to see each other instead of flying across the country was seriously the best. We were able to plan so many new trips and experiences that we weren’t able to do while he was in the military.
About a year and a half ago we moved to Auburn Hills, MI from both of our hometowns. John goes to school in the area so it made sense to move. I’m sure he thinks he made a mistake because now he has to deal with 500 decorative pillows, he gets to hang up all of the picture frames around the house, and he gets to deal with me redecorating 25/7. But on the bright side, he gets to see me every day LOL.
I have loved these past five years and I couldn’t imagine my life any different. We started basically as kids and we’ve watched each other grow into who we are today. Sounds cheesy, oh well, but we make each other better.
